Our History

“You might not know the name, but you’ve almost certainly come into contact with one of our kitchens.”

As a family run business for over 50 years, we’ve manufactured in excess of 10 million kitchen units in that time. We’ve supplied large national retailers, and put kitchens into many new build homes. We’ve a very long, and proud history in kitchen manufacturing, and we want to share this with you.

Founded In The 1950's

Joseph Tootell started his career by taking over his father’s French Polishing buisness in the early 1950’s. His buisness quickly grew, supplying veneered and solid wood drop leaf tables, glass fronted bureau’s and bedding boxes. As the business grew, he expanded to new premises in the early 1960’s to cope with demand.

Site Expansion

  • 1960’s, Fitted kitchen furniture which didn’t exist in the mass market before the 1950’s increasingly became the fashion in the mid 1960’s. Production moved from lacquering furniture, into the volume manufacture of kitchen furniture.
  • 1970’s, The business continued to grow, and expand into new production areas. We began to offer flat pack furniture into builders merchants, and in the late 1970’s we began to supply Wickes with their kitchens.
  • 1980’s, As Wickes popularity increased across the UK, we equally expanded the factory and machinery to cope with their ever increasing kitchen demand.

Pioneering Machinery

In 1987, we introduced the first vinyl press machinery into the UK market, and began pressing our own vinyl doors. In the same year we opened a second factory to supply kitchens specifically to the growing social housing market.

Showroom Opening

1990’s, The early 90’s were dominated by a recession, and sales slumped across the two manufacturing sites. Despite this, the business continued and sales to Wickes grew at an unprecedented rate. In 1996, Wickes got into financial difficulty, and their managment team was replaced. At this point, we agreed to phase out supply of kitchens to Wickes.

In 2000 we launched our new retail showroom near to the factory, retailing kitchens to the local community.
